How to allocate more RAM to Minecraft

How much memory to give Minecraft, where to change it and why more isn't always better.

Minecraft runs on Java, and Java gets as much memory as it's allowed. Too little — the game stutters and crashes with “OutOfMemoryError”. Too much — the system is left starving and freezes begin.

How much

  • Vanilla: 2–4 GB.
  • A light build with up to 50 mods: 4–6 GB.
  • A big modpack: 6–10 GB.
  • A server for a few friends: 2–4 GB, with mods 4–8 GB.

Rule of thumb: leave the system at least 3–4 GB.

Where to change it

The launcher settings hold the default memory, and every build has its own in its settings if it needs more. The Resources tab shows how much memory your PC has and how much is free.

How to tell it's too little

After every game the launcher saves how much memory it used. If the Statistics tab shows the game hitting the limit, add 1–2 GB.

FAQ

Why did giving 16 GB make things worse?

Java cleans memory less often and for longer — hence freezes. And the system gets less. 6–8 GB is better.

How much memory on a 32-bit system?

32-bit Java can't take more than ~1.5 GB. Mods need a 64-bit system.
