How to boost FPS in Minecraft

What really adds frames in Minecraft: game memory, performance mods, graphics and shader settings. Step by step in TCLauncher.

Minecraft lags for three reasons: too little memory for the game, a weak spot in the game itself (chunk rendering, lighting) or too many heavy mods and shaders. Here is what to check, from the simplest.

1. Give the game the right amount of memory

The Resources tab shows how much memory your computer has and how much is free right now. Vanilla needs 2–4 GB, a modded build 4–8 GB. More is not always better: if the game takes almost everything, the system starves and stutters begin.

2. Install performance mods

The biggest boost comes from Sodium (Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge) — it rewrites rendering and often doubles FPS. Lithium (world logic) and FerriteCore (less memory) pair well with it. Find them in the Mods tab — the catalog only shows files that fit your game version and loader.

3. Graphics settings

  • Render distance is the main slider. 8–12 chunks is a sensible middle.
  • Smooth lighting and clouds — turn off if FPS is below 60.
  • Particles — “Decreased”.
  • VSync — turn off if the game can't hold 60 on a 60 Hz screen.

4. Shaders only with headroom

Shaders cost the most. If you barely get 60 without them, expect 20–30 with them. In TCLauncher shaders come with an Iris-based mod and are just as easy to turn off.

5. Find what slows you down

After each game the launcher stores FPS and memory for the session — the Statistics tab shows which build drops. If drops started after a new mod, disable it in the Mods tab and compare.

FAQ

How much memory should Minecraft get?

2–4 GB for vanilla, 4–8 GB for a modded build. Don't give it almost all of your RAM — the system needs some too.

Does Sodium work on Forge?

Official Sodium is released for Fabric, Quilt and NeoForge. For older Forge versions, look for other performance mods in the catalog.
