How to create your own Minecraft server

Your own Minecraft server on your own PC: choosing a core, memory, inviting friends over the internet and playing together without a server.

Your own server is a world that lives apart from the game: friends join whenever they like, even when you aren't playing. In TCLauncher a server is created in the Server tab in a few clicks.

1. Pick a core

  • Vanilla — the plain game.
  • Paper / Purpur — faster, with plugins; players join with a normal client.
  • Fabric / Forge / NeoForge — for mods; players need the same build.

2. Memory and world

2–4 GB is enough for a few friends. Seed, game mode, difficulty and whitelist are in the server settings and can be changed later.

3. How friends join

On your home network friends use the local address the launcher shows. To join over the internet, forward the server port (25565 by default) on your router to your PC.

Don't want to touch the router? Use a room in the Rooms tab: it opens your world to friends over the internet with no setup, and modded players get the same build automatically.

4. Backups

Back up the world before big changes. Connect Google Drive in the launcher and server and world backups are stored there.

Download TCLauncher — you can run a server today.

FAQ

Do I need a separate computer for a server?

No, the server runs on your own computer. But when it's off, the server is offline too.

How do I play with a friend without port forwarding?

Create a room in the Rooms tab — it opens your world over the internet without router setup.
