How to join a Minecraft server
How to add a server by IP, which version and mods you need, why “Failed to verify username” and how to play with an offline nickname.
To join a server you need three things: the address, the same game version and the same mods (if the server is modded).
Step by step
- Get the server address — for example
play.example.comor an IP with a port. - Launch a build with the same version as the server.
- In game: Multiplayer → Add Server, paste the address.
Modded servers
If the server owner provides a modpack, install it and the mod versions will match. Friends with TCLauncher can play together in rooms: the host's build reaches guests automatically.
Common errors
- Outdated client / server — a different game version.
- Failed to verify username — the server is licensed and needs a Microsoft account.
- Mod rejections — mods are missing or have other versions.
Download TCLauncher — it's free.
