How to Get a Minecraft Skin Without Premium

How to put your own skin on an offline name: the Skins tab in TCLauncher, the MCL Skin mod, 64×64 and HD formats, slim and classic arms.

Playing with an offline name and always seeing Steve or Alex? That's not a bug: vanilla Minecraft only takes skins from Mojang's servers, and they know nothing about your name. To make your skin appear in the game, you need a mod that takes the image from your computer. In TCLauncher that's our own mod, MCL Skin, and you don't need to install it by hand.

What you need

  • An offline name in the “Accounts” tab (the “Add name” button).
  • An instance with Fabric, Quilt, Forge or NeoForge on version 1.14 or newer. Pure vanilla has nowhere to put the mod, and older versions lack the game mechanisms it needs. How to create an instance: how to install mods.
  • A skin image.

Step 1. Add the skin to your library

Open the “Skins” tab. This is your library: skins are stored as PNGs in the launcher's folder and are available offline. You can add a skin in three ways:

  1. The “Add from a file” button.
  2. Just drag the image into the launcher window.
  3. “Take by nickname” — the skin of any premium player from Mojang's public directory.

You can see the model in 3D before you even set the skin: drag with the mouse to rotate it.

Which images work

  • 64×64 — the modern layout.
  • HD — 128×128 or 256×256.
  • 64×32 — the old pre-1.8 layout and its upscaled copies.
  • PNG, JPG, BMP or GIF formats.

The launcher scales the image down to 64×64 itself and converts the old layout into the new one. It scales using “nearest neighbour”, without smoothing — so the transparent parts of the second layer (hood, glasses, sleeves) keep crisp edges instead of getting covered in semi-transparent smudges. What exactly was done to the image is noted next to its name. A photo or an image of a different shape won't be accepted, and the launcher will explain why.

Slim or classic arms

You don't need to choose the model separately: the launcher works out whether it's “Slim arms” (slim, like Alex) or “Classic arms” (classic, like Steve). On a slim arm, two columns of the texture are empty — that's how it can tell.

Step 2. Put the skin in the game

  1. Make sure your offline name is selected in the “Accounts” tab.
  2. In “Skins”, choose the skin you want and click “Set the skin”.
  3. Launch an instance with Fabric, Quilt, Forge or NeoForge.

Before every launch of such an instance, the launcher downloads the right MCL Skin file for its loader and game version and puts the selected skin into the instance folder. You join the game — and you already have your skin.

You can take the skin off with the “Remove from the game” button: only the PNG is deleted, while the mod itself stays and doesn't get in the way.

Who sees your skin

You always see yourself with your skin: the image is taken straight from disk and works even offline. If you've signed in to your profile in the “Profile” tab, the skin also goes to the dashboard — then other TCLauncher players on the same server will see it. Players with other launchers will see the default skin.

Common mistakes

  • The instance is vanilla. The MCL Skin mod needs a mod loader: create an instance with Fabric, Quilt, Forge or NeoForge in the “Instances” tab.
  • The game version is below 1.14. On those versions you can't set a skin for an offline name — pick a newer one.
  • The wrong account is selected. The skin is set for the name selected in the “Accounts” tab; if you have several names, check which one you're launching the game with.
  • The image isn't a skin. Only a skin layout with the right proportions will work — a regular photo will be rejected, and the launcher will explain why.

What if you own the game?

With a Microsoft account you don't need the mod. The same “Set the skin” button uploads the skin to the official Minecraft service, and every player on any premium server sees it — in any launcher.

Download TCLauncher — it's free, and the first launch takes just a few minutes.

FAQ

Why am I still Steve?

Check that an offline name is selected and that the instance has Fabric, Quilt, Forge or NeoForge and version 1.14 or newer. An offline skin won't appear in a vanilla instance.

Can other players see my skin?

TCLauncher players can, if you're signed in to your profile: the skin goes to the dashboard. Other players on the server see you with the default skin. Only a Microsoft account gives you a skin everyone sees.

Do HD skins work?

Yes: 128×128 and 256×256 are accepted. The launcher scales them down to 64×64 without smoothing.

Do I need to download MCL Skin manually?

No. The launcher installs the right mod file itself before every launch of an instance with a mod loader.
