How to Choose a Safe Minecraft Launcher
What to check before you install a Minecraft launcher: ads, what it sends, file checksums and an honest privacy policy — and how TCLauncher measures up.
A launcher is the program you open before every game. It downloads Minecraft, mods and Java from the internet and runs them on your computer — so it deserves the same care as any other program with that much access. Below is a short checklist that works for any launcher, and how TCLauncher answers each point.
Why it matters
Unofficial launchers are especially popular with people who play under an offline name, and they differ a lot. Some make money from ads, bundled “offers” or collecting data, and don't always explain what they do on your computer. A good launcher has nothing to hide: it says plainly what it sends and lets you check that the file you downloaded is genuine.
A checklist for any launcher
- Ads and “offers”. Does it show banners, open web pages on its own or suggest installing other programs during setup? If a program lives on ads, you are its product.
- What it sends. Is there a privacy policy in plain language: which data leaves your computer, where it goes and why? Does it work without an account at all?
- Checksums. Does the developer publish SHA-256 for every file? It's the simplest way to make sure nobody swapped the archive along the way.
- Where you download it. Only from the developer's own website. Copies on file-hosting sites and in “bundles” are where tampered builds usually come from.
- Updates. Does it update itself, and does it check what it downloads before replacing anything?
- Your files. Can you see where the game, worlds and mods are stored, and take them with you?
How TCLauncher answers
No ads, no tracking
TCLauncher is free and shows no ads. The online profile (the “dashboard”) is optional. Without it, your computer only sends requests to Mojang, Microsoft and the Modrinth mod catalogue — the game simply can't be downloaded without them. If you do sign in to a profile with your email, the privacy policy lists exactly what is stored (game stats, friends and so on) and why. You can delete the profile together with all its data.
You can verify the file
The download section of the website publishes SHA-256 checksums for every file. Compare the checksum of the archive you downloaded and you'll know you got our file. The launcher also installs updates itself and checks the SHA-256 of every file before replacing anything.
On first launch, Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”. That's how the SmartScreen filter reacts to programs without a paid developer certificate: click “More info” → “Run anyway”, and the SHA-256 check will settle any doubts.
Lightweight and self-contained
The launcher itself is about 2 MB and pulls in no third-party libraries. The Windows version comes with Java built in, and the Java for the game itself — 8 for old releases, 17 or 21 for new ones — is downloaded by the launcher into its own folder. You don't need to install anything system-wide. Instances, worlds and mods live in ordinary folders that you can open right from the launcher and take with you.
What else it can do
- Every game version — from
rd-132211from 2009 to the latest snapshot, with search and filters. - Offline names and Microsoft accounts in one place, as many accounts as you like.
- Forge, NeoForge, Fabric and Quilt install straight from the launcher. More in the comparison Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt.
- Mods and modpacks from the Modrinth catalogue — with dependencies and updates. How it works: how to install mods.
- A skin for your offline name that shows up in the game itself — via our MCL Skin mod. See how to get a skin without premium.
- Playing with friends: rooms with no router setup, plus your own server in a separate tab — how to play with a friend.
- Worlds with backups, game crashes explained in plain language, 15 interface languages and dozens of themes.
How to get started
- Download TCLauncher from our website and, if you like, check the SHA-256.
- Unpack the archive into any folder (or use the installer) and run
TCLauncher.exe. - In the “Accounts” tab, click “Add name” and type your name — or “Sign in with Microsoft” if you own the game.
- Already have a game folder from another launcher? Open “Instances” → “Import…” and pick that folder. The launcher reads the game and loader version from it, installs the official loader and works directly with that folder — nothing gets copied.
- Or create a new instance with the “New instance” button and reinstall your mods from the catalogue — that way you get fresh mod versions.
- Click “PLAY”.
An offline name works in singleplayer and on servers with online-mode=false. Premium servers and a skin that every player sees require a Microsoft account that owns the game — that's true in any launcher.
Download TCLauncher — it's free, and the first launch takes just a few minutes.
FAQ
Is TCLauncher really free?
Yes. The launcher is free and has no ads. There's an optional subscription that unlocks the full AI assistant and exclusive themes, but it doesn't affect the game, mods or versions.
Can I play without buying Minecraft?
Yes: add an offline name in the “Accounts” tab. It works in singleplayer and on servers with online-mode=false. Premium servers require a Microsoft account.
Will my worlds and mods from another launcher carry over?
Yes: “Instances” → “Import…” and pick the game folder of that instance. The launcher picks it up together with its worlds and mods, without copying any files.
How can I make sure the file hasn't been tampered with?
Calculate the SHA-256 of the downloaded file and compare it with the checksum published in the download section of the website.
