How to move to a new Minecraft version with mods
How to move a build or a server to a new game version: which mods are already out, what happens to the world and how not to break saves.
A new Minecraft version comes out — and mods don't update at once. It's best to move a build so the old one stays intact.
A build
- In the Instances tab click the move-to-new-version button next to the build.
- The launcher checks which mods already have a release for the new version and shows what won't move.
- A new build is created alongside — the old one stays as it was.
A server
In the Server tab the “Other version…” button creates a new server on the version or core you want and moves worlds, players and mods.
The world
- A world can be opened in a newer version — the game upgrades it.
- You can't move it back to an older version.
- Blocks from mods that don't exist for the new version will disappear.
So always back up the world before moving.

FAQ
Why are some mods missing for the new version?
Authors update at different speeds. Sometimes it's worth waiting a few weeks.
Will my world break?
A vanilla world opens fine in a newer version. The risk is when mods disappear — so back up.
